The vineyard and the wines of Pouilly

In the Center Val de Loire wine region, on the right bank of the Loire, come and discover Pouilly vineyard and 2 Appellations of Controlled Origin : Pouilly sur Loire and Pouilly Fumé. Only one grape variety is authorized per appellation : Sauvignon Blanc for the AOC Pouilly Fumé (over 1,300 hectares), and Chasselas for the AOC Pouilly sur Loire (less than 30 hectares). Spread over 7 towns in the Nièvre department, no less than 165 producers offer their version of these very aromatic dry whites, typical of the Loire.

Dry and fruity white wine, Pouilly Fumé is generous and elegant. It expresses a distinctive and unique “flinty” character typical from the Pouilly terroir. Minerality and fruitiness are the typicality of this wine ! It pairs very well with fish, seafood, white meats and cheeses. What about tasting the traditional small fried Loire fish with a glass of Pouilly Fumé ?

Pouilly sur Loire is a thirst-quenching wine, easy-drinking and refreshing. Lighter and more discreet than Pouilly Fumé, Pouilly sur Loire is appreciated for simple occasions. As an aperitif, with some seafood, shellfish, or with local goat cheese (chavignol), this wine is full of surprises !

There are 4 main types of soil :
- Sandy clay or clayey sand : the wines produced on these soils are softer with citrusy and floral notes. They evolve quickly and should be tasted young.

- Limestone of Villiers and Limestone of Barrois : locally called "Caillottes", limestone soils reflect the sun's rays and heat up quickly. They allow the grapes to reach their optimum maturity early. The wines from this terroir have a beautiful freshness and reveal fruity aromas, sometimes with light floral and mineral notes.

- Flint lands (siliceous, clay-siliceous soils) : also called "Chailloux", these soils produce drier and livelier wines on the palate but just as rich. You can feel these flinty aromas but also floral and spicy notes typical from this soil.

- Kimmeridgian marls (stones with comma-shaped small fossil oyster shells) : also called "white lands", marls offer full-bodied round wines with mineral, whites flowers and fruity notes. These wines have a good length on the palate and sometimes a light sensation of sweetness with a fresh finish.
